Root apex resection in Munich (Schwabing)
An inflamed tooth root must be removed to preserve the tooth. Even with a root canal treatment it is usually no longer possible to remove the entire inflammation if it already reached the area of the root tips.
An unavoidable root tip resection should always be performed as early as possible to avoid permanent damage to the jawbone. In contrast to root canal treatment the tooth is not accessed from above the tooth crown but from the side of the inflamed area. With good planning the whole procedure usually takes less than an hour and can be performed completely painless under local anesthesia.
SIGNS OF IMPENDING ROOT TIP RESECTION
- Persistent feeling of pressure
- Fistula formation
- Radiating or localized toothache

If an infected tooth is well preserved and firmly grown into the jawbone it can be preserved for many more years. A successful apicoectomy also means an aesthetic advantage as the teeth still look harmonious.
PROCEDURE OF A ROOT APEX RESECTION
The first step is to expose the root tip by opening part of the surrounding tissue. The inflamed tissue around the root tip and inside the root canal must be completely removed to prevent the inflammation from breaking out again. Before the wound is sutured the entire area is disinfected. The healing process usually takes seven to ten days depending on the extent of the inflammation.
